As we head into summer, it’s time to talk about one of the most overlooked areas of skin care: the feet. Foot problems are more prevalent in summer due to the rising heat and humidity and the tendency for people to walk around barefoot or wear closed shoes without socks.

The Basics

Basic foot care is similar to basic skin care except the skin on the sole of the foot is thicker than skin anywhere else on the body. And because of this, I recommend you do the following to ensure you keep your feet healthy this summer.

Dry them off:

The foot has a large supply of sweat glands and thick skin that retains moisture. This makes drying your feet just as important as cleansing them. Towel drying and allowing the feet time to air dry is usually enough; however, if you’re pressed for time, consider using a blow dryer on your feet before you put on your shoes and socks.

Exfoliate:

If you develop calluses, use creams with exfoliating agents, such as salicylic acid or foot peels with glycolic acid. Pumice stones and foot files also work well, but don’t overdo it. If you experience pain with these instruments, stop using them.of its natural protective oils, leaving it red and irritated.

FACT: Exfoliation removes dead surface skin cells to reveal softer, silkier skin.

Moisturize:

Even sweaty feet can get dry, scaly and cracked. I recommend you use a moisturizer 1-2 times a day that has glycolic acid, ammonium lactate or urea as active ingredients. Apply 3-5 minutes after bathing and rub thoroughly into dry skin.

FACT: You walk an average of four miles every day. Keep those hard working feet happy by keeping them smooth.

Get a Pedicure:

Pedicures by trained professionals look good, and they are also good for your feet. Make sure you get one in a hygienic environment using sterile instruments.

FACT: A pedicure can be very relaxing as well as therapeutic, so treat your feet!

Keep Your Shoes On:

Going barefoot and scraping the skin on the bottom of your feet creates a good environment for bacteria and fungus to spread. Wear shoes made of breathable materials and wear socks if you wear shoes that make your feet sweat to absorb excess moisture.
